Celebrating Professor Carlton Gyles: A Vanguard in Veterinary Microbiology and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 

The appointment of Carlton Gyles Professor Emeritus of the University of Guelph as an Officer of the Order of Canada recognizes his life-long significant contributions to research in veterinary microbiology (https://www.gg.ca/en/honours/recipients/146-126105). Dr. Gyles is not only a world-renowned scientist and expert but a strong advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Professor Gyles has studied Escherichia coli for several decades and has authored numerous research papers and books. His research has led to the development of infectious disease management practices that have improved food safety, human and animal health. As a Professor Emeritus at the Ontario Veterinary College, Dr. Gyles has mentored many students, and encouraged them to pursue careers in veterinary medicine, research, and public health.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Dr. Gyles moved to Canada as a scholar and obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and his PhD before the age of thirty. He has always maintained a deep connection to his Caribbean roots which has influenced his commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in veterinary medicine and academia. He has created opportunities for underrepresented groups in the scientific community and as a founding member of the Black Veterinary Association of Canada, has inspired Black youth to pursue careers in animal health by providing guidance and mentorship. His recognition by the Order of Canada highlights the importance of fostering DEI efforts in the veterinary and scientific communities.

Dr. Gyles' involvement in several professional organizations including the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has further demonstrated his commitment to the veterinary community. His awards and accolades are extensive, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of Veterinary Microbiologists. His leadership and scholarship achievements will continue to influence future generations of scientists and veterinarians. On behalf of BVAC, congratulations Dr. Carlton Gyles on this honor!
